While the industry in Nashik city is still struggling to come to terms with the setback caused by the ‘exodus’ of North Indian workers, the picture in the district is in sharp contrast, with industries in Sinnnar, Gonde and Dindori running smoothly.

SP Gupta, IG special range, Nashik, held a meeting on Monday with industrialists, labour contractors and labour commissioner, in the district to build a sense of confidence in the present situation. “The situation in the district is peaceful,” said Gupta.

He said that the discussion with the industry representatives was very positive and there have been no complaints of exodus or industries closed from the district.

The industrialists, narrating their experience, stated that as part of company policy that indulged into corporate social responsibility and many have built schools, public halls, water harvesting projects, etc for the villages around.

The villagers had built a good rapport with the industries and so they themselves came forward voluntarily to help and protect the north Indians working in these factories.

“In Shankar Nagar area of Musalgaon Sinnar industry, about 2,000 to 2,500 North Indians reside and work in the factories there. When the disturbance broke, the industrialists supported the people.

A meeting of the industrialists, workers and villagers along with the police was held. Owners took responsibility of their workers, neighbours stood up to protect them and police provided security and vigil all through.

This helped stabilise the situation and our people did not leave. The industry in Sinnar is not affected,” stated Narayan Patil, president of the Sinnar Industries and Manufacturers’ Association.

A few North Indians in these areas of the district may have left but that was because of the panic created by rumours. “I have 104 workers including Maharashtrians and North Indians and all of them are on work today,” said an industrialist.

He also cited the example of Niphad, which lost Ambadas Dharrao to a stone-pelting incident during the turmoil. “It was a sensitive incident for people of Niphad; but they displayed maturity. The GRD members played a vital role in explaining the situation to the people. The villagers of Niphad, came together, irrespective of parties and banners and held a silent march to register their protest.”

The officials were appreciative of the sense of responsibility and maturity displayed by villagers, local politicians, media and the Dharrao family in Niphad.

Security verification: Based on this incident, the dy commissioner, labour, Nashik stated that system of employing security guards and their verification is being reassessed. There are plans to employ security guards through the government security board, as a precautionary measure.
