Police are almost certain that robbery was not he motive behind Friday’s brutal killings Dilip Chandan Radenri, 72, and his wife Varsha, 61, in their apartment at Garden Crest building, Santa Cruz (west).

Having spoken to the murdered couple’s son, Neeraj, they now believe that prime suspect Sandeep Maingade, the 29-year-old domestic help of the Radenris, could have killed the two “for them being strict disciplinarians”.

“Neeraj, the son, told us in his statement that his parents followed a disciplined lifestyle and hated lethargy. They were very particular about the timings of their daily schedule, and often rebuked Maingade for not abiding by the rules. This could have resulted in the servant loathing the elderly couple,” said senior inspector Dilip Gaikwad of Santa Cruz police station.

Gaikwad added that a police team had left to Ratnagiri, Maingade’s native place. “Prima facie, it doesn’t seem that motive could be robbery. Nothing was found stolen. We suspect that Maingade’s extreme loathing for the couple led to him killing them,” he said.

“According to the post-mortem report, the assailant first hit the couple with a blunt object on their heads, which resulted in their deaths around 9pm on Friday,” said a doctor from Cooper Hospital on condition of anonymity. He then took the bodies to the kitchen, wrapped them in a blanket, poured oil on it and set them on fire.

“Dilip’s body was 100 per cent charred, while Varsha sustained 65 per cent burns. We found blood on her sole, which confirmed that she did not die from burn injuries. She was dead before being burnt, killed with a blunt object.”

“I don’t know much as I started working here only two days ago,” said Suresh Singh, a watchman at Garden Crest building told DNA on Sunday.

“We are in a state of shock and would not like to speak to the media,” said a relative of Radenris, who did not wish to be named.

The charred bodies of the couple were first found by their son, Neeraj, around 7.15 pm on Saturday.
