Can a dog's life get any better in this city? A few day's ago we convincingly reported that it couldn't. We were wrong…it could get a lot better, in Thane.

Meet Sanil and Aparna Kadam. The couple, from Thane, has started a resort and care centre where people can leave their pet dogs when they are too busy, out of town, or simply unable to care for their pooches.

The Apsan Canine Resort, situated in a small village called Bhavale — located 25 kilometres from Thane on the Mumbai-Agra highway — was built four years ago on a shoe-string budget.

Today, however, dogs from all over Mumbai visit the resort to catch some much-needed R 'n' R.

The Resort, set on 44,000 square feet boasts 24 spacious kennels — four of which are of the luxury air-conditioned variety — used for lodging and boarding. The resort even offers a pick-up and drop facility.

But it's not all fun and games for the canine celebs, there is also a training facility, where skills in basic obedience, advance obedience, personal protection, attack training and company and property protection, are finely honed.

Aparna and Sanil owe a debt of gratitude to the dogs in their life, because if it wasn't for Aparna's pet German Shepherd, the couple would never have met. In 1997, Aparna was on the look-out for a dog trainer, and a friend told her about Sanil, who has just started out in the field. Over time, Sanil and Aparna grew fond of each other and started meeting often, a year later they were married.

“We wanted to start a centre where we could provide people with the best facilities for their pet dogs, so we started this resort which is like a home away from home,” said Aparna.

And in case the dogs are feeling a tad under the weather, there's always Dr V M Chariar who's on call.

“I dropped my pet German Shepherd off as I was going to my native place last month, now I have come to take him home and he looks so well groomed,” said Mihir Khade, a resident of Thane.

Film actress Meghna Naidu, who is also a client of the resort, said, “Apsan is a great place and Aparna and Sanil take care of our pets very well. I leave my pet pug Zoie there, whenever I am out on a shoot.”

“The dogs are fed exactly what they would be given at home, we change it only if it is harmful for them. We have special kitchen staff who cook food for dogs used to home-made meals,” said Sanil. The charges for lodging range from Rs250 to Rs450 per day, training charges can vary from Rs10,000 to Rs15,000, this also includes lodging.
