Franchises to decide on icon status for Sehwag and Laxman

MUMBAI: VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag could get ‘iconic’ status in the DLF Indian Premier League.

The duo could join the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly as icon players, who can only play for their respective cities and will not go under the hammer when star players are auctioned on February 20.

IPL chairman Lalit Modi announced on Wednesday that real estate developers DLF had won the bid for title sponsor. “Four bidders submitted their bids, one bidder withdrew, but all qualified.

The winning bidder was DLF at Rs 200 crore for five years. The league will now be known as DLF Indian Premier League. The minimum bid price was Rs 125 crore,” Modi said.

“Percept’D Mark, Hero Honda in association with World Sport Group were the other two bidders in the race, while 21st Century Media were allowed to withdraw as they couldn’t identify product category for exclusivity,” the IPL chairman added.

Talking about the possibility of Laxman and Sehwag becoming icon players, Modi said there were divergent views on whether to include them or not as according to the tender conditions only four icon players were finalised. However, Delhi franchise GMR and Hyderabad franchisee Deccan Chronicle were keen on retaining their star players, who lead the state sides when not doing national duty.

“As far as adding Laxman and Sehwag are concerned, the IPL’s governing body has suggested that all the eight franchises meet and discuss the issue and come back with either a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ by the morning of February 19,” Modi added. “Only the franchises can modify the conditions stated in the tenders,” he added.
