Family says cops killed Khan and dumped his body to wash their hands off the incident

MUMBAI: Hundreds of people flocked to the Byculla police station on Wednesday afternoon accusing police of beating a youth to death and trying to cover up the incident to look it like an accident.

Asif Khan, 20, a car mechanic, living with his family in Nagpada was found dead on Wednesday afternoon over the shutter of a communication centre at Mazgoan. While the police maintained that Khan got stuck in the shutter while attempting a theft, the family alleged police torture, resulting in his death. The police rubbished the claims about torture at their hands.

Khan had a record of petty crimes including assault and theft at Nagpada and Byculla police stations, said the police. He was also a drug-addict, added the officials. When the police rushed him to KEM Hospital, he was declared brought dead. “The preliminary report indicates that Khan died due to suffocation. We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” said Ganesh Rathod, police inspector, Byculla police station. Khan is survived by his parents and an elder and a younger brothers.

Khan’s family members cried hoarse and said that police officers beat Khan to death and dumped his body on the shutter to wash their hands off the incident. “I saw two plain-clothed men taking Khan around 11.30 pm on Tuesday. The police must have beaten him to death,” said Imran Shaikh, Khan’s childhood friend and who lives only two houses away from Khan’s house. The police called up the family and said that their son was found dead.

The family is now mulling over moving the human rights commission to get justice. “The police are lying to us. Khan was beaten to death and the police now want to cover up their misdeeds,” said Mushtaq Khan, the father. Relatives who thronged the police station said that there were bruises on Khan’s body, especially the hands and legs. “If he was stuck in the shutter, what explains the bruises on his body,” asked Khan’s brother Sameer.
