Chhota Shakeel gang had sought Rs25 cr from doc

MUMBAI: Alleged kidney racket kingpin Santosh Raut alias Amit Kumar may be on the wanted list of police forces across the country. But DNA has learnt that even the underworld is on the lookout for the fugitive.

A senior police officer told DNA that in January last year the crime branch arrested two alleged aides of gangster Chhota Shakeel, who said they had come to Mumbai to kill Raut. “They said they had been sent to India after Raut’s family refused to pay Rs25 crore to Shakeel,” he said.

The officer, who asked not to be identified, said the two men - Jameer Zaheer Ahmed Khan, 31, and Tanvir Mohammad Aslam Sayyed, 31 - were arrested by the anti-extortion cell on January 16, 2007, near the Bandra (West) bus station.

The officer said, “In 2006, Jameer, on Shakeel’s instruction, called Sunita at her house and hotel from Dubai and demanded Rs25crore. Sunita told him that Raut no longer lived with her, but Shakeel was not convinced and sent two men to Mumbai to kill him.”

The officer said Sunita also received a letter from Jameer, which contained two photographs of Raut. While the first was fine, the second contained an animated graphic in which Raut’s face was covered with blood. The letter warned that if the demand was not met, Raut’s second photograph would become reality.

Sunita then informed the police. On a tip-off, the police arrested Khan and Sayyed from Bandra (West).

The officer said the threat from the underworld was an indication of the amount of money Raut had made in the illegal kidney transplant racket. But deputy commissioner of police (detection) Deven Bharti refused to comment, saying he was unaware of the details of the case.
