Twelve persons entered Lilavati Hospital at Bandra on Wednesday morning, went up to the second floor, and attacked consulting pharmacist Dushyant Mehta, blackening his face.

Additional Commissioner of Police (western region) Archana Tyagi said: “Our initial information was that 25 persons entered the hospital and asked for Mehta. Finding him on the second floor in a doctor’s cabin, they blackened his face and beat him up.”

Asked if it was the handiwork of the employees’ union affiliated to the Shiv Sena, which is being challenged by a faction controlled by Congress politician Narayan Rane, she said: “We are still to establish the identity of the persons. We have charged them with rioting, unlawful assembly, and causing hurt.”

Senior Inspector Prakash George, who is investigating the case, said: “The CCTV (closed circuit television) footage of the incident confirms the presence of 12 persons who punched Mehta. He has been unable to identify any of the assailants.”

George said police would question the hospital’s security how a dozen persons were able to barge in and beat up an official without being stopped by anyone.

In his statement, Mehta said the attack could be a consequence of the continuing dispute among trustees of the hospital for control of the charitable trust. He was treated at the hospital for minor bruises.

Retired Bombay high court Justice AA Halbe, appointed by the Supreme Court as administrator of Lilavati Hospital, told DNA, “I was not witness to the incident, but I gathered from Dr Narendra Trivedi that this group of people had assembled on the second floor office of Dushyant Mehta after entering the hospital in twos and threes and assaulted him.” They punched him and tore his clothes and dragged him to the ground floor where they smeared some black substance on his face and left, he said. Dr Trivedi was not available for comment.
