Police may have by now had a crucial piece of evidence of the shameful footage of two girls being molested near Juhu Tara Road on Tuesday morning.

A mobile van, which was close by, was equipped with a CCTV equipment. “Unfortunately, they were not functioning and hence could not capture the footage,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that city police has missed out on crucial evidence despite CCTVs being installed near the scene of crime. Following are the previous botch-ups:

October 2006: Police informer Amjad Khan and  Himanshu Chaudhry, were gunned down in front of all at Kala Ghoda, but the CCTV close by came to no use.

November 2006: There was a CCTV on Carter Road, Bandra, but footage of the Allister Pareira incident could not be captured as there the connections took a long time to go up.

May 2007: A CCTV at Worli Seaface failed to record footage of two youngsters, speeding on a motorbike, crashing full tilt into the road divider railing. Both died in the crash.
