LUCKNOW: Some of the party-goers, on the eve of new year, are in for a surprise when they will be gifted with chocolates and candles by none other than the police.

This time around, the district police has come up with a novel idea to check accidents and brawls by drunkards - offer chocolates and candles for teetotallers and lockup for the drunken drivers.

"Data regarding the number of road mishaps, drunken brawls and other incidents on new year's eve for the last five year are frightening. To avoid such incidents, the police will do extensive checking on December 31.

"We will have chocolates, candles and toffees for those who are stopped for checking and are not found to be drunk but we will put all those in lock-ups who are found in inebriated state," a senior police officer told PTI.

The drive will start from 6 pm and continue till the wee hours on the new year with policemen armed with breath analysers to check drunken driving on the road.

The upmarket areas, malls, multiplexes and clubs will be on the hit list of the police, which has also made plans to streamline traffic arrangements around the places where party-goers are expected to make merry.
