MUMBAI: Irfan Shaikh, father of Imran, who was killed in an “encounter” by Crime Branch last Friday, filed a complaint with Deonar police on Thursday. He alleged that three people barged into his house on Wednesday and threatened to kill every single member of his family if they did not claim Imran’s body from the JJ Hospital morgue.

In his complaint (No. 4325 / 07), a copy of which is with DNA, Shaikh stated that the trio who threatened his family identified themselves as a builder, a corporator and a policeman. “They said that they would kill everyone in my family if I raised the issue of Imran’s death anymore,” said Shaikh. While the three were inside the house, around 15 men, armed with swords and choppers, were waiting outside the house, he added.

Last Friday, the Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) of Crime Branch had killed Imran and Ram Bahadur Sahani, alias Doctor, in an encounter. The officers claimed that the duo belonged to the Bunty Pandey gang, and had come to Powai kill a local NCP corporator.

Shaikh claimed that on Wednesday, when he went to the court to file a petition seeking probe into the “fake encounter”, a group of men threatened him as he was coming out. Terrified, he went to the morgue in the evening and claimed his son’s body around 10 pm, he added. The family had not claimed Imran’s body for five days as a mark of protest. Shaikh now plans to approach the state human rights commission. He has begun a signature campaign in his locality to beat up support for his crusade against the “police atrocity”. “I have written in details about the real character of my son. He was an innocent boy. People in our locality share the same view, and are signing up in support of the the campaign,” he said.

Deonar police confirmed that Shaikh had filed a complaint on Thursday. “When he came to the police station, he was very scared. We registered his complaint, and extended every possible help to him,” said a senior officer of Deonar police station, on condition of anonymity.

According to Shaikh, he had last seen Imran alive on December 10. “He left home around 9 am on an errand. But when he did not return, we filed a missing complaint with Deonar police,” he said. Before the cops could give him any news about his son, the Shaikhs came to know from newspaper reports last Saturday that Imran had been killed in an “encounter” in Powai on December 14.
