Madan Mohan Pandya, the tea stall owner who allegedly killed Malad-based jeweller Naresh Jain, was desperate to go to his native place in Rajasthan but Jain reportedly ‘threatened’ him with dire consequences if he left without repaying his loan. Frustrated and angry, Pandya devised a plan to eliminate him.

Thirteen years after his marriage, Pandya finally became a father when his wife gave birth to a baby boy on Friday. However, within 24 hours, Pandya was allegedly in a murderous mood.

“Jain dared Pandya to leave for Rajasthan without returning his money,” said Uttam Khairmode, senior inspector with Dindoshi police. “Jain had been mentally torturing Pandya over repayment.”

Pandya, who wanted to buy a house at Mira Road, had taken a housing loan, but was falling short of Rs50,000 which he borrowed from Jain in 2006 at a ridiculously high interest of eight per cent a day. “Since all the procedures for the housing loan were done, Pandya did not want to lose the house for a mere Rs50,000 and thus took the loan from Jain,” says Khairmode.

After realising that Jain could go to any extent to recover his money, Pandya allegedly plotted to kill him. Pandya told the police he had decided to eliminate Jain as he was sure Jain would kill him.

Pandya also said that after Jain stopped him from going to meet his and newborn son, he became bitter. Jain lent money at high interest rates to several people.

Pandya, who reportedly planned the murder for Saturday, postponed it to Sunday. He called Jain to the bank in Shivbaug building where he worked. After strangulating Jain with a nylon rope, Pandya tied up the body in a gunny bag and kept it near the staircase of the building and burned it, pouring kerosene on it.
