MUMBAI: Mumbai pulled off a nail-biting win over Rajasthan in their Ranji Trophy Group A tie in Jhalawar on Wednesday.

Giving a good chase, the hosts almost piled up the winning runs, but faltered in the end as they were bowled out two runs short of target. Both Mumbai and Maharashtra are placed joined second with 15 points each with Delhi topping the list with 17.

Rajasthan had made up for their poor show in the first innings, with a hundred from Vineet Saxena and half-centuries from Nikhil Doru and Robin Bist as they chased a target of 384.

They needed 46 in seven overs when the fifth wicket fell as Rohit Jhalani was run out for 14. Rajasthan still had enough wickets left to play out a draw but a panic in the ranks caused three more run-outs.

“The run outs saved our day as they came in such a crucial period that it crippled the confidence of the opposing team. The panic mounted with every delivery and that made the game exciting. Beating Maharashtra would have been difficult had the mishaps not occurred,” said Mumbai coach Praveen Amre.

That the home side was unfortunate was apparent as the last three batsmen were dismissed off the final three balls of the match.

Scorecard: Mumbai 295 & 267 for 4 dec; Rajasthan 179 & 381 (target: 384 runs) V Saxena 122, NS Doru 82; U Malvi 1-61, M Hussain 2-58
