Defending champions set up a challenging 364-run target; hosts Rajasthan 48-1 in reply

MUMBAI: Mumbai have had the habit of bouncing back from the dumps. And this time they did it again.

After going through a rough patch on the first two days, the defending champions sprung back and set up an imposing total of 384 runs for Rajasthan to chase on the penultimate day of their Ranji Trophy match at Sports Complex ground Jhalawar on Tuesday.

At the end of the day, Mumbai were on top as they scalped the wicket of the dangerous opening batsman Manish Sharma off seamer Usman Malvi. Rajasthan finished at 48 for 1 with opener Vineet Saxena (21) and R Bishnoi (21) unconquered.

Earlier, Rajasthan, who were 175 for 9 overnight, were bundled out for a first innings total of 179.

The defending champions had no option but to go all out if they had to register an outright and gain the maximum number of points. And they exactly did that.

The openers Sahil Kukreja and Ajinkya Rahane scored runs at a decent pace and also enjoyed an opening stand of 119, before the latter was dismissed by medium-pacer Shamsher Singh for 39.

Kukreja in the bid completed his half century and than followed Rahane to the pavilion.
Skipper Amol Muzumdar scored a crucial unbeaten 68 off 87 balls. He stitched a 64-run partnership with Rohit Sharma for the third wicket.
