KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and ex-chief selector Aamir Sohail wants the Board to bring back Javed Miandad as coach to put the national team on the right track.

Sohail said Miandad's return would also ease the pressure on young captain Shoaib Malik.

"There is still time to reduce the problems for Pakistan cricket by making Miandad the coach. This will also allow Malik to become a better captain and also concentrate on his game," Sohail said in an interview to a Pakistani newspaper.

Sohail said Miandad was an intelligent coach who could turn around the fortunes of the team.

Miandad has served as national team coach for three different terms but every time his term ended in acrimony over selection and disciplinary issues.

"At the moment there are three captains in the Pakistan dressing room and this has only added to the problems in the team," Sohail said.

The former opener lashed out at coach Geoff Lawson, blaming him for creating problems in the team.

He said Pakistan Cricket Board were keen on having a foreign coach but Lawson had failed to make any visible impact on the team's fortunes since succeeding the late Bob Woolmer who died during the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

The outspoken Sohail, who was chief selector in 2003-04, said that though Lawson was a former Test bowler, he had little positive effect on the Pakistan bowlers in India.

"India has ran up totals of over 600 in two successive Tests and our bowlers have struggled. If we had played with five bowlers in Bangalore, may be the situation could have been different," he said.

The former skipper feared a bleak future for the team under Lawson and also hit out at the Board for showing no teeth in disciplinary issues.

"The way Younis Khan played up the captaincy issue before the final Test is a complete failure on part of the team management and the Board is also lacking in will to set things right in the team," he added.

Sohail also criticised selectors for not picking Sohail Tanvir and left arm spinner Abdul Rehman for the final Test in Bangalore.

Sohail backed speedster Shoaib Akhtar as a match-winner bowler and said he still had some cricket left in him.

"He has to be used properly and if he has proper support he can win matches for the team."
