MUMBAI: In the fourth such case in the city in three days, a 13-year-old boy ended his life at his Shivaji Park home on Thursday.
Gaurang Dalvi, a Std IX of Bombay Scottish School, Mahim, took the step while his parents were away at work and his grandmother was asleep in an adjacent room. She found him hanging from the ceiling fan when she went to check on him around 3pm.
Gaurang was a single child, said police, adding he did not leave behind any suicide note.
The teenager’s father works in a MNC at Bandra-Kurla Complex while his mother is a school teacher.
Preliminary investigations indicate Gaurang was upset as he had failed in two papers in his mid-term exams. Fear of facing his parents probably pushed him to the edge, say police. “Initial probe suggests he was upset with his scores. We are recording the statements of his classmates and teachers,” said an official from Shivaji Park police station.
The police are also probing the possibility of Gaurang being depressed or disturbed as he spent long hours on the internet. Generally reserved by nature, he occasionally went out to play cricket with friends. A failed relationship that blossomed on online chat rooms is also being closely tracked. “We’ve gathered that he used to be hooked to the Net while he was alone at home. It’s possible he may have been mentally disturbed,” added the official.
The police are now waiting for his parents to recover from the shock to record their statements.
