Information kiosks with their headquarters in Mantralaya will connect every village

A year from now, no landholder in the state will necessarily have to reach district offices to get his land records updated or other certificates issued.

All these and more can be done at the information kiosks Common Services Centre (CSC), the government is planning to set up in grampanchayats across the state.

“We have more than 42,000 villages in the state and the plan is to provide at least one kiosk every six villages. This will save a lot of time and money for the villagers,” said IT department secretary K Shivaji.

Bids have been called from private operators to set up as many as 7,285 CSCs in rural areas and 924 in urban areas, including in cities like Mumbai and Pune.

A kiosk, according to plans, will service a cluster of six villages. Services on the offer will include land records, vehicle registration, birth/death certificates and utility services.

The services could also be extended to include web-surfing, printing, games, chatting, photocopying and downloading forms.

The state government has invited separate bids for six divisions to operate, implement and maintain the kiosks. The operators will get basic financial support from the government so that services provided to villagers can be subsidised.

The state is also expecting negative-bidding from private players as it feels that service providers will be in a position to earn sufficient money from the commercial activities offered through CSCs.

The kiosk will be nearly 200 sq ft in size and will be available at the grampanchayat. The state government officials claimed that once fully-operational, the kiosks would help connect every corner of the state with its headquarter in Mantralaya.
