LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday revoked the suspension of 22 senior IPS officers who had come under the scanner in connection with the police recruitment scam but removed from a key post a senior official, who had headed the investigations into it.

The post of Additional DGP of Special Task Force, headed by Shailaja Kant Mishra, who had headed the committee to go into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of Provincial Armed Constabulary and police constables, was abolished, Chief Minister's Principal Secretary Shailesh Krishna said on Saturday.

Mishra, who headed the elite force that dealt with activities of extremists and militants, had landed in a controversy with his remarks that some women candidates recruited in the controversial drive had complained of sexual exploitation.

This had invited the wrath of women constables and the Samajwadi Party which had conducted demonstrations in various parts of the state.

Krishna said the post of ADGP, STF, has been abolished and the job would now now be looked after by ADGP, law and order.

Less than two months after the suspension of 25 officers in connection with the scam, the government today lifted the action against 22 of them.  A decision on the remaining three IPS officials could not be taken as their explanations had not yet been received.

The officers were suspended on the basis of an inquiry committee, which had detected large sale irregularties in the recruitment of the police and PAC constables during the regime of Mulayam Singh Yadav. The Mayawati government had annulled the recruitment of over 18,000 constables.
