Guv’s delay in deciding govt formation forces Delhi move

BANGALORE: Frustrated over governor Rameshwar Thakur’s delay in taking a decision on the formation of a BJP-JD(S) government in Karnataka, leaders of the two parties have decided to seek presidential intervention.

Over 125 BJP and JD(S) legislators left for Delhi on Monday night and are likely to parade themselves before the President on Tuesday afternoon. The coalition leaders have sought an appointment with the President which is still to be confirmed.

Former transport minister N Cheluvarayaswamy confirmed that the JD(S) will parade its all 49, but two MLAs, before the President. “(Kumaraswamy’s brother) HD Revanna and BC Patil have personal reasons for not making it,” he said.

BJP leaders and former ministers Katta Subrahmanya Naidu and R Ashok said the party’s all MLAs will be in Delhi by Monday night. It has been 10 days since 129 legislators belonging to the two parties paraded themselves before the governor, seeking permission to form a government under BS Yediyurappa’s leadership. JD(S) legislative party leader and former CM HD Kumaraswamy and JD(S) state chief Merajuddin Patel have already submitted letters of support to the BJP.

Raj Bhavan sources said the governor sent his final report to the Centre on Monday and is awaiting response.

Meanwhile, JD(S) national president and former PM HD Deve Gowda created unease by sending a 12-point MoU draft to BJP leaders for supporting the government. The UPA government at the Centre has decided to wait and watch.

The Congress is hoping that the bickering JD(S) and BJP fail to form a government and it can then enforce a mid-term poll in the state, sources said.

However, the party was jolted on Monday when its Janandolan Rally against the alleged misdeeds of the JD(S)-BJP coalition government flopped due to its own internal power struggle.
