CHANDIGARH: Former DGP of Punjab SS Virk, who was arrested last month in New Delhi for “amassing properties disproportionate to his sources of income”, got a reprieve when the Punjab and Haryana high court released him on bail.

Earlier, his bail application was turned down by the Ropar court on the ground that the vigilance bureau (VB), which took him into custody, was yet to interrogate him.

Soon after his arrest Virk was hospitalised here and later sent to judicial custody. As a result, the VB could not question the former DGP of Punjab.

According to the FIR registered against him in Mohali, Virk allegedly accumulated movable and immovable properties worth more than Rs 100 crores. The Punjab VB registered the corruption case against him last month and within hours arrested him in Delhi.

The duty magistrate in Mohali remanded him to one day's police custody. The VB subsequently raided his residence in Chandigarh. The VB officials also raided the house of a former militant, Sukhi, who is believed to have been a close confidante of Virk during his term as the DGP
