KOLKATA: Just a year back she dreamt of taking control of West Bengal. While that remained a distant dream, the ‘unputdownable’ supremo of Trinamool Congress,

Mamta Banerjee, had to vacate her ancestral house at Kolkata on Monday night with her mother and take shelter at her party’s headquarters in another part of the city. Didi’s sudden decision was due to her continuing tension with her brothers- one pestering her to help him get a stronghold in the city’s real estate business and the other using her name for extortion.

Before vacating her ancestral residence located at the dingy lanes of Kalighat in south Kolkata, Mamta has informed the local police station in writing that she was leaving her ancestral house with her mother with the intention of cutting off ties with the remaining members of her family.

“There is no connection of politics with my decision. I have no other place to stay and so I am taking refuge at my party headquarters. The public in general are my family members and I want to stay closer to them,” Mamta wrote in the letter addressed to the officer-in-charge of the local Kalighat police station.

The deputy commissioner (south) Zabed Shamim said that since Mamta has not accused anyone in the letter, the police are considering it as a general diary and not a FIR.

Mamta’s decision has come as a huge embarrassment for her brothers. Both of them rushed to the Trinamool headquarters on Tuesday morning to persuade her to return to her ancestral place. Mamta, however, refused to meet any of them.

Party sources told DNA that tension between Mamta and her brothers was on the rise for some time. “Both of them tried to exploit her popularity to make their own fortune. One of them had even resorted to hooliganism and extortion in the locality.  Mamta tried to persuade both of them for restraining from such activities that might malign her image in public. The tension was its peak during the recent Durga puja and one of her brothers even misbehaved with her. Then she decided to shift to the party headquarters,” a senior Trinamool leader said.

Later on Tuesday evening, however, Mamta said, “I do not have any grouse against anybody. I want to stay closer to the people and hence I shifted here. There is nothing else to it.”
