Faisal to stay at JJ Hospital till October 30. Psychiatry department says it needs to observe him for a while longer

MUMBAI: Actor Aamir Khan’s brother Faisal will have to stay put in JJ Hospital till October 30. The police submitted a report filed by the head of the hospital’s psychiatry department, Dr RM Haridas, before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court (MMC) in Bandra on Saturday, recommending that Faisal be kept under observation for some more time.

The psychiatry department has also said it would like to meet Faisal’s family to determine the nature of his relationship with them. Although preliminary tests have been conducted on Faisal to see if he is schizophrenic, as alleged,  there have been no inferences based on them.

Khar police station officers traced Faisal, who went missing from his Pali Hill residence on September 29, to a hotel in Lonavala on October 15. His mother, Zeenat, had filed a missing persons complaint with the police station on October 12. As per the complaint, Faisal was undergoing treatment for paranoid schizophrenia, and was allegedly not safe on his own as he had stopped taking his medication a few days before he went missing.

Seeking custody, Faisal’s father, Tahir Husain, told the court that his son was indeed fit — both mentally and physically — and that he was ready to take care of him. He assured the court that if Faisal’s custody was handed over to him, he would ensure his son he restarted his business.

Husain’s second wife, Shehnaz, also deposed before the court, saying that she spoke with Faisal over the phone almost every day, and that he was absolutely normal. Husain, however, alleged that his first wife Zeenat — Faisal and Aamir’s mother — was unhappy that he was living with Shehnaz.

It was on her insistence, Husain said, that he bought her a flat in Marina Apartment in Bandra, and also made a film (Madhosh, in 1994) with Faisal in the lead.

Husain informed the court that Faisal had sought medical treatment three years ago, when he went into depression following his divorce. “The girl was from London. She told Faisal to buy her a bungalow there, but he could not do it,” Husain said. “The expense of the treatment at the time was borne by Aamir,” he added.

Opposing Husain’s application for Faisal’s custody, Zeenat, Aamir and his sister Nikhat Khan Hegde made a counter application stating that Faisal was still under treatment for paranoid schizophrenia. Their application also mentioned that Faisal had been in the psychiatric care of Dr Harish Shetty, and still had the tendency to cause harm to himself and others. Nikhat said, “If he causes injury to himself or to anybody else, who will take responsibility?”

The application added that Aamir had given Faisal Rs9 lakh to “reinstate him in society”. Husain’s lawyer, US Vanjara, however, contested that, saying, “If he believed that Faisal was mentally unsound, why did he give him so much money?”Among those present in court were Zeenat, Nikhat and Aamir Khan’s wife, Kiran Rao.
