Issues of national importance like that of terrorist attacks took a back seat in Kannada newspapers when regional politics filled the pages.

While the English newspapers had the bomb blasts at Ajmer as a major item, the regional  newspapers, Prajavani, Samyukta Karnataka, Kannada Prabha and Vijay Karnataka, mentioned the news as a brief.

Kannada Prabha reported the last rites of late chief minister S R Bommai on the front page besides the lead article on collapsed hopes of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coming to power.

Newspapers predicted that the political drama could see an end to former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda’s regime in the party. Samyukta Karnataka, in an opinion article, said Deve Gowda has lost the right to ask for votes after creating such a situation because of his power hungry politics.

And there is no question of a new alliance in Karnataka as Gowda has already cheated the two main political parties.

Prajavani criticised Governor Rameshwar Thakur’s decision of suspending the assembly without dissolving it.  The suspension buys time for the parties to play dirty game and again form a weak alliance, opines the newspaper. His decision would only extend the turmoil, it said.

But Samyukta Karnataka has a different opinion. “Politics here was more interesting than the cricket matches played between India and Australia. Kumaraswamy’s resignation and his support to the BJP in the last moment and BS Yediyurappa rushing back to Bangalore for his thirst for power and the Congress’s apparent diplomatic moves were more interesting,” wrote the newspaper.

Now, the newspapers are reporting about the politics of polling and patching up. The BJP leaders are travelling across the state on dharma yuddha to expose Gowda and his family. Kumaraswamy is also planning for such a trip to expose the BJP.

And the Congress is waiting for directions from the high command.  The JD (S) rebellions are secretly meeting the BJP and Congress leaders. “Could there be another drama of coalition at the last moment?” question the newspapers.
