The Oshiwara police arrested a 35-year-old labourer who had stolen a Vertu mobile phone worth Rs2 lakh from the counter of a shop at Link Road. On Spetmebr 29, Khuddus Razzaq Ali had walked in to Otati Lifestyles, a furniture and interiors shop at Laxmi Industrial Estate on Link Road. After walking around the shop for some time, he picked up the Vertu mobile phone lying on the shop’s cash counter while owner Sonia Kumar was busy attending to customers.
“By the time Sonia realised that the phone had been stolen and raised an alarm, Ali had managed to escape,” said Police Inspector Dilip Patil of the Oshiwara police.
Acting on a tip-off that a labourer living in a slum area near Link Road was looking for prospective buyers for a cell phone, police picked up Ali for questioning. Ali confessed to the crime and police also recovered the Vertu phone from his hutment.
Police believe that Ali was not aware how costly the phone was. “He wanted to earn some easy money,” said Patil. Police have not found any previous offences registered against Ali so far.
