MUMBAI: A BEST driver was arrested for rash and negligent driving on Monday, after the bus he was driving killed a 24-year-old youth on a motorbike in an accident at Mahim. The driver, Deepak Kale, 38, was booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 304 (a). He was produced before the metropolitan magistrate in Bandra on Tuesday and was granted bail on a surety of Rs5,000.

A visit to a friend’s home on a motorbike to Bandra proved too costly for Ejaz Koradia. He was killed when a BEST bus (MH-01-H-331) rammed into his bike near Canara Bank in Mahim around 10.30 pm on Monday. Koradia sustained severe head and skull injuries and was rushed to Sion hospital by a police patrol.

However, doctors declared him dead before admission. A resident of Pydhonie, Koradia was a garment dealer, police said. “The driver rammed into the bike from the left side. The biker was flung into the air by the impact and fell on the road,” said a police officer from Mahim police station.

The Koradia household, which is in a state of shock is yet to formally record their statement with the police. “So far, we just know that Koradia was returning home after visiting a friend in Bandra. We are waiting for the family to give its statement,” added the officer.

Incidentally, this is the second such incident in three days wherein a BEST bus has run over and killed a person.

On Saturday, six-year-old Shabarin Khan, a resident of Shivaji Nagar, was killed at Deonar when she was run over by a speeding BEST bus. Shabarin was standing on the roadside along with friends watching the Eid moonrise after breaking her Ramzan fast (roza) when the incident happened.

In another incident on Tuesday, Prakash Bhoite, a BEST bus driver, was allegedly manhandled by a driver of an auto rickshaw. The auto driver alleged that Bhoite rammed the BEST bus into his vehicle from the back. The unidentified auto driver beat up Bhoite and also abused him. The Deonar police have launched a manhunt for the auto driver.
