NEW DELHI: A day after seven people were killed by a Blueline bus in South Delhi and Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna expressed his displeasure over increasing road
mishaps, Delhi government on Monday said it would soon come out with a status report on the public transport system.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit held a series of meetings throughout the day with senior officials of the transport department and traffic officials to take corrective"
measures to rein in Bluelines.

Sources said that at the meeting it was decided to formulate a status report on the public transport system since the tenders for "corporatisation" of the buses were already
issued.

Earlier in the day, the government got a rap on its knuckles from Khanna who expressed his displeasure over increasing incidents of bus accidents in the city.

The meeting was attended by Dikshit, city Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal, Transport Commissioner D M Sapolia besides other senior officials.

Sources said Khanna expressed his concern over the reckless driving by Blueline buses and fatal mishaps and asked the government to take urgent steps to check the menace at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf stressed the need to strengthen technology, including GPS, to keep track on the movement of buses.

"There is no problem with the bus. Technology is the only solution to keep a check on the movement of the bus drivers. We have issued tenders for the GPS system and hope to install them soon in the buses," Yusuf told reporters here.

He ruled out immediate phase-out of the blueline buses saying that it would lead to shortage of buses in the city.

"But by the next year the permits of the most of the Blueline buses will expire and we will not extend them," he said adding that meanwhile new fleet of low-floored buses for
which tenders will be issued will be on the roads.
