NEW DELHI: With better infrastructure and soaring income levels, the travel and tourism sector in the country is expected to employ about seven million more people over the next 10 years, a recent study has said.
"A revolutionary growth is being witnessed in the Indian travel, tourism, airline and hospitality industries. It will lead to the creation of over seven million new jobs in India in the next 10 years," Elixir Web Solutions' Business Intelligence Team study said.
As many as 41.8 million people are directly or indirectly employed in the tourism sector in India, according to IBEF.
India is the favoured destination for majority of the travellers to South Asia which spells a pulsating future with immense job prospects in the sector.
The area is growing at a rate of 10 per cent, double the global growth in the sector, the study said.
"The growth of tourism in South Asia is boosted by India, the destination responsible for half the arrivals to the sub-region," the study said quoting United Nations World Tourism Organisation.
"India expects a tourist inflow of around 10 million in 2010 when it will host the Commonwealth Games," Union Tourism Minister Ambika Soni had earlier said.
The sector, which is already on an upswing, is set to witness a boom time in the near future.
Globally also, job opportunities in the travel and tourism sector would far outnumber those in the software industry over the next few years, the study said.
If the software industry offered jobs to 1,20,000 software professionals every year globally, the travel-tourism and hospitality industry has the potential to generate 5-10 million new jobs every year over the next three years, a worldwide report from Public Relations Society of India said.
Globally, this sector at present is one of the largest employers with a workforce of over 250 million people and the employment creation is expected to grow at about 50 per cent faster rate than any other sector in the world, the Elixir study said.
"Wonderful career opportunities with professional growth and fat pay packets await professionals in airlines, airports, travel and tourism management companies, hotels, resorts, cruise vessels, travel BPO's to name a few, " Elixir Web Solutions Partner Vipul Prakash said.
The industry is already known for providing handsome package to its staff like chef, managers and senior managers and public relationship officers, Prakash said.
Apart from the regular jobs, new forms of tourism like medial and rural tourism would create jobs in those areas as well, the study added.
Investment opportunities would arise in hotel industry, service apartments, adventure, health tourism, amusement parks, highway tourism and convention centres, the Elixier study said.
"Huge demand for skilled people will crop up in this sector, the need for skilled workforce matching international standards will be needed with foreign tourist making a beeline towards India," Prakash said.
However, the massive growth is being hampered by lack of adequately trained, skilled manpower leading to decline in the professional standards of the industry, the study added.
"The issue is not one of employment, it is one of employables," Prakash said.
