A trip down Mohammed Ali Road on a Ramzan evening is a must-do for every gourmand in the city. As the ‘muezzin’ gives a call to prayer at sundown, the street metamorphoses into a food haven, with tradition and culinary innovations teaming up to dish out lip-smacking delights.

One can sample everything, from piping hot paya soup, goat trotters, shammi kebabs, tikka botis, sweet and creamy firni to malpuas.

The culinary treat spills over to other streets of the city as well. There are several nooks and corners spread across this megapolis, stacked with mouth-watering treasures. The menu may not be as elaborate as the one at Mohammed Ali Road, but even then they are just as enticing.

Peer into the bylanes of Madanpura near Mumbai Central. Every evening, a feast of baida rolls, seekh kebabs and biryani is laid out. Bohri Mohalla in the heart of Bhendi Bazar is famous for chicken lollipops, mutton chops, haleem, harisa and bhuna gosht. Mahim, Bandra, Jogeshwari and Mira Road have their own smaller versions of Ramzan street festival. Sameer Shah often samples the sumptuous fare spread along the Mahim Durga stretch.

Gourmands also recommend Iqbalbhai’s kebabs on Lady Jamsetji Road, Mahim. Jaffer Bhai’s Delhi Darbar, opposite St. Michael’s Church, too basks in the glory of its harisa and haleem.

The stretch of SV Road outside Jogeshwari station, is famous for seekh and tawa parathas.“They come at just Rs 18 for four pieces,” said Farhan Queresh. Food stalls near Shams Masjid at Naya Nagar, Mira Road, too make the cut with their delicious haleem and mutton khichda.
