Residents of Pali village in Bhayandar (W) have been, since the last fifteen days, complaining of stench of decomposing bodies from the nearby post-mortem centre.
The Mira Bhayander post-mortem centre became the only operational autopsy centre after the Mira Bhayander municipal corporation took over its operations from the Zilla Parishad.
“Earlier, Bhayandar had two post-mortem centres, one at Temba primary health care centre and other at the village.
There were plans to transfer the two primary health centres to the Mira Bhayander municipal corporation,” said Milan Mhatre a councillor from Bhayander.
“This transfer has adversely affected the villagers as the corporation has not made any provisions to provide basic facilities at the centre,” Mhatre added.
Villagers said that the centre does not even have a cold storage.
“A 200 sq ft room with broken windows, gloves on the windows, scissor and a hammer in the corner of the room and a wash basin with the clothes of the deceased’s body is what the post-mortem centre looks like,” said Melva Gadsi a villager who stays near the centre.
“Since the post-mortem centre at Temba health centre has closed, the number of bodies that come to the centre has increased drastically. Since post-mortem cannot be conducted after evening, the bodies that come in a bad state start decomposing.,” Gadsi said.
Municipal commissioner Sudamrao Gaikwad agreed there was only one post-mortem centre currently operating in the area. Gaikwad said that the doctors from the municipal corporation could not conduct the post-mortem as they did not have the rights for it.
