Shastri appointed NCA chairman

MUMBAI: Former Test captain and all rounder Ravi Shastri was on Friday appointed new chairman of Bangalore-based National Cricket Academy at the Cricket Board's 78th AGM after he agreed in principle to do the job.

However, the player-turned-TV commentator has sought 'a day or two' to get back to BCCI and commit himself to the high-profile post after looking into his commitments, BCCI Treasurer N Srinivasan said at a media conference after the meeting.

"Shastri has agreed in principle to take over as NCA chairman but has said he would get back to the Board after seeing into his commitments," said Srinivasan.

Srinivasan also formally announced that the AGM elected Vidarbha's Shashank Manohar as President-elect to take over as its 29th president at next September's AGM.

BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah, however, said no interim president had been decided upon to take over from incumbent Sharad Pawar, who chaired Friday's meeting, when he quits office in June next year to move over to the International Cricket Counil as its president next June.

Shah's statement refuted reports in the media that Baroda Cricket Association's Chirayu Amin would be the interim president of the BCCI from the time Pawar quits and Manohar assumes its reins.

Various committees were appointed at the AGM, including the all-powerful working committee but barring the senior and junior selection committees which continue from last year with Dilip Vengsarkar and Sanjeev Sharma heading them.
