NEW DELHI: When Live India reporter Prakash Singh was plotting with Rashmi Singh (the girl who posed as a student being forced into prostitution) the sting operation against government school teacher Uma Khurana, he was unknowingly planting evidence against himself.

Police now have the complete transcript of the conversation between Rashmi and Prakash, giving details of how the reporter and Virendra Arora (the other accused) involved Rashmi in the fake sting.

A member of the probe team said the transcript makes clear several facts. First, that Khurana was indeed framed and second, Rashmi, a small-time journalist with a Noida-based paper, was convinced by Prakash to help in the sting on the pretext that “she was going to expose a great evil”.

The conversation between Prakash and Rashmi (from the time he asked her to be a part of the operation, till the plot was executed) was recorded on the mobile phone chip of Rashmi, which she later gave to police. It was only after going through the transcript of this recorded conversation that police were able to establish Khurana’s innocence.

On Saturday, when the trial court granted bail to Rashmi, it observed that the latter part of the conversation between Prakash and Rashmi as given in the transcript proved that she wanted to quit the plot since she became doubtful of his intentions.

“When Prakash asked Rashmi to claim in front of the camera that she was a student, she became doubtful and wanted to opt out of the sting. A part of the conversation establishes that Prakash threatened her to continue helping him in the sting and told her that if she fell out, he would disclose her identity in the video and show her as being a prostitute,” a source said.

Police had earlier disclosed that Rashmi agreed to participate in the sting since she was told by Prakash that her name would be shown as associate crime reporter. Prakash was then working with another channel. However, when Rashmi saw the sting on Live India,  she decided to complain to police.
