Tension following installation of idol

SALEM/TN: Tension prevailed in Tammampatty in Attur near here following a dispute between two communities after the installation of a Vinayak idol at a busy street near a mosque in connection with Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations, police said.

Protesting against the installation of the idol in the area, people belonging to a particular community blocked the road yesterday for a few hours. They also demanded relocation of the idol.

Revenue and police officials held discussions with leaders of both communities and decided to put a curtain between the mosque and the place where the idol was kept, police said.

Top police officials are camping in the area.
