LAHORE: The controversial role played by the Saudi government in the deportation of Nawaz Sharif to Jeddah has become a subject of intense debate across Pakistan. The Saudi kingdom has become an unprecedented target of public anger and criticism.
Saudi Arabia, which was revered by Pakistanis in the past, is facing severe criticism for having hurt public sentiments by helping the military regime. The Sharif-led Pakistan Muslim League has publicly declared that cordial relations between Pakistan and Saudi are seriously affected after the detention of Nawaz Sharif to the kingdom as per Musharraf’s whims.
“The people of Pakistan used to respect Saudi rulers, but they have played the role of a jailer under Musharraf. They have no right to interfere in the affairs of Pakistan,” said the secretary of the Sharif-led PML, Ahsan Iqbal.
However, Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Pakistan Ali Auwaz Eseri said that Saudi Arabia did not play any role in Sharif’s deportation to Jeddah. Eseri said that the Pakistan government took the decision in the wake of an exile agreement.
Ali Dayan Hasan, the representative of the Human Rights Watch in Pakistan, condemned Saudi’s role in Sharif’s deportation: “The arrival of the Saudi intelligence chief had given an idea that the Saudis might whisk away Sharif to enable Musharraf get himself re-elected for next five years.”
Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan also accused the Saudis. He added that Musharraf is leaving for Saudi Arabia on Thursday to thank the king for the deportation that would help him finalise his power sharing deal with Benazir Bhutto.
