Two members of the Sambhaji Nagar Sahkari Griha Nirman Sanstha Limited — a housing society under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority scheme — located at Mhaske Chawl on Akurli Road in Kandivili (East) have alleged that they were denied allotment of flats by the society’s committee members without any reason.

Shakuntala Mhaske and Rashmi Sawant, who have lived in the chawl for more than 25 years, have now filed a non-cognisable complaint with the police in this matter. The proposal to develop the chawl had been made by Samarth Erectors and Developers Private Limited.

Mhaske alleged that the society’s committee members did not involve all society members when deciding on the development of the chawl. Sawant said that there were four members facing this problem. She alleged that the committee members were biased in allotting flats. “When we were told that the allotment of flats would be through a lottery, we requested the committee members to allot us flats according to our choice,” said Sawant.

“I had asked the committee why only 38 names had been included in the allotment list when 40 flats were to be allotted. I was told that my query was not relevant and asked me to reply within two days whether I was interested in the allotment of a flat.”

Mhaske and Sawant have both received letters from the society stating that they were held ineligible for the allotment of flats, even when they had informed the society of their willingness to accept the allotment of flats through a lottery.

Bhushan Patil, the plot’s developer, said, “All allotment procedures were followed according to the rules. The two families did not give their approval till the final allotment list had been prepared. By the time the committee members received their approval, it was too late as other members had to be accommodated in the list.”

Vasant Shinde, the society’s secretary, said that Mhaske and Sawant never cooperated with members. “Instead, they would dissuade them from being a part of the project.” When asked whether there was a bias in the allotment of flats, Shinde said that it was decided in the committee meetings to give flats only to committee members. He said that two members had refused to accept flats in Sunday’s allotment and that any two members can now take the flats.
