Company plans to put up 22,000 MW of power generation capacity

NEW DELHI: NTPC Ltd is likely to get a $1 billion lending from Asian Development Bank (ADB). Sources said the company was yet to clear the last mile with a green signal from the ADB board still to come.

NTPC chairman T Shankarlingam confirmed that the company was in discussion with ADB but did not give the details. The company had, last year, tied up a $300 million loan with ADB.

The government-owned power major plans to put up 22,000 MW of power generation capacity, including about 2,000 MW from hydropower. This would involve an investment of about Rs 88,000 crore.

ADB's direct share in the earlier loan was $75 million while the remaining $225 million is to be provided by private commercial banks under the complementary financing scheme of the bank.

The $300 million loan would help fund capital expenditure for the Sipat super thermal power plant in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, and for the second stage of the Kahalgaon super thermal power plant in Bhagalpur, Bihar.

The two projects would add 4,480 MW of electricity to the national grid between 2006 and 2009.

The company has drawn plans to invest Rs 12,792 crore in various projects during the current year. It is targeting 50,000 MW by the end of the Eleventh Plan in 2011-12.

Being the country's largest electricity generator, the materialisation of these targets is important, especially in the wake of almost 50% slippage in the Tenth Plan target of 41,110 MW.

NTPC plans to achieve its targets through a mix of new plants and acquisitions, especially through power stations of state electricity boards and the diversification of its portfolio to include hydro, nuclear and renewable resources.
