UP chief minister Mayawati announces sops, celebrates 100 days in office

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati celebrated her 100 days in office amidst rousing fanfare on Wednesday, even as critics saw a virtual return of the feudal cult at the event.

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister said: “The main difference between our government and those of other parties is that we do what we say.”

Opposition parties were, however, not convinced about her performance as senior BJP leader Om Prakash Singh said: “As compared to the Mulayam government, the change is only cosmetic.”

The criticism was not entirely baseless as just about three months into governance, the Mayawati government had been compelled to go on the backfoot on several major decisions. A case in point is the new policy on contract farming under which big corporates would be licensed to enter into contracts with farmers directly to buy their produce. The policy has been decried as a complete sell-out to big business houses, and Mayawati herself was forced to backtrack on the issue.

Then there is the special FIR drive. “The drive is being used to settle political scores and target Samajwadi Party leaders,” said senior SP leader Azam Khan.

“If Mayawati wants to deal with political enemies in this fashion, she might as well get us shot by the police, plant a firearm and claim that the SP leader had been killed in an encounter,” he said.

“This government is no different from the previous one,” said Ram Asrey Verma, state president, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). He alleged that Mayawati government was playing into the hands of the sugar lobby.

Mayawati rewarded a 20-member team of the Uttar Pradesh Police Special Task Force that bumped off bandit Shiv Kumar Patel, alias Dadua.

The CM said action has been taken against 948 of the listed 1,452 mafia gangs, while possession was restored to 49,000 of the 69,000 deprived allottees of government land in villages.

Reservation in allocation of key police appointments and filling the backlog of 16,637 vacancies against reserved posts in other departments were listed too.

Meanwhile, the CM also gifted Anand Kumar, her brother — the ‘Bahujan Prerna Kendra’ on the occassion of rakhi and believes change of ownership wont change the  objective of its creation.

The title of the Bahujan Prerna Kendra, originally owned by the BSP, has been transferred to the Bahujan Prerna Trust recently formed by Mayawati’s brother Anand Kumar. The property had been “donated” as a “gift” to the trust by party general secretary Babu Singh Kushwaha.
