After a two-day wait, actor Sanjay Dutt is finally expected to walk out of Pune’s Yerwada prison today. His lawyers received a certified copy of the Supreme Court order granting him interim bail late on Tuesday evening.

“We will approach the Tada court on Wednesday morning and subsequently produce Dutt’s release order before the Pune jail authorities,” Dutt’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde said. Dutt and five other 1993 blasts convicts were granted interim bail by the SC on Monday as the Tada court had failed to provide them with a copy of the judgment. The six convicts have been asked to surrender before the Tada court once they receive a copy of the judgment.

Dutt and his associate Yusuf Nulwala, who too was granted interim bail, were sentenced to six years’ imprisonment after their conviction under the Arms Act in the ‘93 blasts case. The four other convicts granted interim relief by the SC are Samir Hingora, Aziz Ahmed Shaikh, Ibrahim Musa Chauhan and Zaibunisa Kazi, all of whom were convicted under Tada, the now-repealed terrorist Act.

On Tuesday evening, the SC order granting interim bail to Hingora was produced by Hingora’s son, Danish, before the Tada court. However, no relief could be granted as Danish reached the court after the proceedings were closed for the day. According to the established procedure, the Tada court will issue a fresh bail bond for the convicts after receiving the SC order and then sign their release orders, which will be produced before the jail authorities.

The freedom, however, will be short-lived for the convicts as they will have to surrender once they are provided with a copy of the judgment. They can seek regular bail when they file the appeal against their conviction in SC.
