GUWAHATI: The Assam government will go ahead with its plan to ask the CBI to probe the kidnapping and subsequent death of P C Ram, the North East head of Food Corporation of India (FCI).

"Although the union home ministry feels that there is no need for such a probe, the government has instructed the chief secretary to take up with the CBI to investigate the case", Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here today.

This, he said, was necessary as Ram's Son had cast doubt on the killing of Ram in crossfire with ULFA militants on July 12.

Ram's son Pravin alleged that the police knew about the presence of his father in the house where he was killed and his postmortem report was not handed over to him.

"The postmortem report will be given to his son although he has not not applied for it which is mandatory", the chief minister said.

"The government is taking all these steps to clear the apprehensions in the minds of Ram's family members.... We do not intend to hide anything.... Let everything be clear", he said.
