DHAKA: Former Bangladesh prime minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, who has been arrested on extortion charges, fears that she would be denied justice even as her party accused jail authorities of obstructing her legal defence.
"The cases lodged against me are false, baseless and politically motivated. I doubt if I will get justice. If justice is done, I will be proved innocent," Advocate Anisul Huq, one of the counsels for Hasina, quoted her as saying after meeting her at a makeshift sub-jail at the parliament complex here.
Huq said Hasina was passing her days there with an apprehension that she will not get justice after her arrest on July 16 from her Sudha Sadan residence at Dhanmondi on an extortion charge and later was asked to submit her wealth statement by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Huq said lawyers of the ex-premier were expecting the copy of the power of attorney and other papers on Saturday following which they would launch a legal battle for her release.
Meanwhile, acting president of the party Zillur Rahman accused jail authorities of obstructing Hasina's legal defence as they did not return the power of attorney sent for her signature even after one week, reports here said.
"It appears that the government appears to be afraid of losing the legal battle, which prompted prison authorities to dillydally in returning the power of attorney," he said.
Rahman said Hasina applied to the Governor of Bangladesh Bank to inform her about the amount of money deposited in her accounts to enable her to submit her wealth statements to the ACC as her bank documents were seized from Sudha Sadan when she was arrested.
