CHANDIGARH: While former chief minister Amarinder Singh announced that he will launch an offensive on chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for the alleged police excesses on Congress leaders, a delegation of the party leaders called on PM Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil seeking their intervention in the matter.

The Congress delegation led by leader of the Congress Legislative wing Rajinder Kaut Bhattal demanded the prime minister and the home minister to seek a report from the Punjab government and caution Badal against unleashing political vendetta on the Congress leaders.

Meanwhile, Amarinder, who returned from England last week after his more than three weeks stay there, said in the last three months, ever since the Akali Dal-BJP government came to power, more than 120 cases had been registered against Congress leaders in the state, which, he said, was tantamount to politics of vendetta.

He vowed that he would never leave Punjab in the days to come, unless the Badal government put a halt to excesses unleashed on Congress leaders.

Badal has denied the charges saying that no Congress leader has been booked by his government so far. He said cases against Amarinder and other Congress leaders pertained to those registered during the former CM's tenure.

Amarinder met his media adviser BIS Chahal in the Patiala jail and the next day called on former Congress MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa in the Amritsar jail to highlight the plight of the Congress leaders.

Scoring a political point over his detractors, who had been gunning for Amarinder for his absence from Punjab, the former CM said he would see for himself the plight of the Congress workers in various constituencies.
