Four notorious armed robbers were arrested in an operation conducted by police official of Zone I as they attempted to rob a jewellery shop near Taj Mahal hotel in Colaba on Saturday evening. The arrested — identified as Munna Darbadar, 37, Abdul Rehman Wahid Siddi, 31, Sayyed Azim Ahmed Sayyed, 34 and Khalid Jainuddin Hasware, 31 — are said to be associates of gangster Chhota Rajan.

“Having received specific information, we laid a trap and arrested them. However, two of their accomplices managed to escape,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone 1, Brijesh Singh.

Police seized a loaded Italian-make pistol, two country-made revolvers (each loaded with three rounds), a chopper, nylon rope and a cloth tape from the accused. Eleven additional rounds were seized from the Honda City car they were travelling in.

“Investigations revealed that the accused worked with Chhota Rajan and are involved in offences like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, extortion and dacoity,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (South Region), K. Venkateshan.

The four were produced before a holiday court at Azad Maidan and have been remanded in police custody till Monday. However, the accused alleged that they were feeding pigeons at the Gateway of India when 40 policemen came and arrested them. They also said that they were police informers.

One of the arrested accused Senior Police Inspector Udaysinh Gaikwar, of the Colaba police station, of having recently taken a bribe of Rs5 lakh from a city-based builder to get her husband killed.

DCP Singh said, “None of my officers informed me about the arrested being their informers.  It is usual for arrested men to level allegations on the police.”
