LUCKNOW: Terming allegations made by NDA against UPA-Left joint Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil as unfortunate, Union Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal on Friday said it was a planned conspiracy to make the presidential elections controversial.

"NDA's attempts to make presidential elections controversial by making allegations against the UPA-Left nominee was a well planned conspiracy," Jaiswal told said.

Dismissing the NDA's allegation of phone tapping of independent Presidential candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Jaiswal said 'it was baseless'.

"Those who find themselves in a tight spot make such allegations," he said, adding 'Samajwadi Party had earlier made these allegations and lost the UP elections.'

When asked who are supporting Patil in Uttar Pradesh, Jaiswal said besides Congress, Rastriya Lok Dal, BSP and Janmorcha were openly supporting her but there were many who were supporting here indirectly, which would be disclosed only after the elections were over.

Highlighting UPA's achievements on front of internal security of the country, the Union Minister said the situation was much better in Jammu and Kashmir and North-Eastern states and peaceful conduct of Vidhan Sabha elections was an indication to this.

About the Naxal problem, he said West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh government had succeeded in curbing the menace but Chhattisgarh government had not succeeded in dealing with the problem so far.

"We are giving all possible assistance to Chhattisgarh and asking it to train its police personnel and follow examples set by Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal," he said.
