A near-successful attempt to cheat a Delhi-based man of Rs7 lakh via e-mails has landed a 34-year-old African national behind bars, after he was caught by police at Santacruz Airport on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Ikbino Bishisht Viona who was sending e-mails to 49-year-old Jaspalsingh Gurvansingh Sandhu, who works as a supervisor in Delhi-based firm, Globe Ground Private Limited.

Viona and his associate, identified as Barister Leo, had contacted Sandhu through e-mails during the month of May, and lured him towards an attractive offer.

“Leo told Sandhu that he had a friend in Malaysia, one BK Sandhu, who had died recently and left behind $93 million in his bank account in Malaysia. He told Jaspalsingh that they can share the amount if he agrees to accept the money from the bank, stating he is a relative of the deceased,” said Police Inspector Madhukar Chaudhary, of the Airport police station.

Initially Sandhu ignored the e-mails, but ultimately he fell pray to the lucrative offer. “Leo told Jaspalsingh that he would have to cough up Rs7 lakh as a security deposit in order to get the money. He then told Sandhu to meet his associate, Andrew Peter, at the domestic airport in Santacruz on Wednesday and hand over the security deposit amount to him,” said PI Chaudhary.

Jaspalsingh came to Mumbai and met Peter near the airport. “As the police maintain a tight vigil at the airport, two constables saw Jaspalsingh giving money to an African and suspected foul play. As soon as they approached them, the African started running, but was nabbed by police. It was then learnt that Peter was none other than Viona and intended to cheat Sandhu,” said Chaudhary.

“We suspect that this could be a well-operated gang who are experts in fraudulent e-mail. We are on the lookout for Viona’s associated Leo. Viona is presently under the police custody,” said Chaudhary.
