RANCHI: Four Jharkhand policemen, including two top officials, are in a soup after a court ordered lodging of complaints against them for not recording the statement of a tribal woman who was allegedly burnt to death by four men last year.

The cops included a superintendent of police, deputy superintendent of police, an officer in-charge and an investigation officer.

A city court on Saturday directed the Ranchi police to register a police complaint against the policemen on charges of murder and ignoring court directives.

The court order related to the case of Poonam Toppo, 35, a tribal woman, who was burnt to death at Ormanjhi in Ranchi in January 2006. The woman was admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Institute (RIMS) here.

Her husband had lodged a police complaint against four people for the crime. The four accused are Hayat Ansari, Firoz Ansari, Ramesh Sahu and Jakir Ansari. They were arrested but later released by police on personal bond.

Husband of Poonam had moved the Ranchi district court so that his wife's statement was recorded by the police. He challenged the release of the accused on a personal bond in a non-bailable case.

The court had directed the police to record the statement of the woman and arrest the accused. But the statement was not recorded and she succumbed eventually to the burn injuries. Police termed the death a case of suicide.

Poonam's husband again moved the court mentioning the history of the case. On Saturday, the Ranchi court directed the city police to lodge a complaint against the four cops.

The next hearing will take place July 2. The court has directed all the four policemen to be present.
