Close on the heels of the uproar in Jaipur following the BJP’s depiction of Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhararaje Scindia as goddess Durga, a similar poster portraying Congress president Sonia Gandhi as Goddess Durga at a party office in Moradabad has landed the district Congress chief in trouble.

Stung by the unsavoury controversy, the Congress on Friday sacked its Moradabad district chief Ajay Saraswat Soni, for displaying the poster which showed Sonia Gandhi with multiple arms atop a lion, puncturing a demonic figure depicted as “corruption” with a spear, in the district office of the party. An inquiry has also been ordered.

The AICC chief condemned the appearance of the said posters and ordered the state Congress committee to inquire into the matter and identify the persons responsible for this, a statement issued here by Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said. Livid at the “blasphemy” last month, Sheetal Kanwar wife of former union minister and senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh had even filed an FIR against Vasundhraraje for projecting herself as Goddess Durga.

While the Congress is irked, the poster has angered some Hindu groups. In Hindu mythology, Durga is considered the destroyer of evil. “This is derogatory to the most widely worshipped Hindu Goddess and we will not sit quiet,” Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Vinod Agarwal told reporters here. “If Muslims can raise violent protests against sketching of a cartoon of their Prophet, how can we remain silent on such blasphemy,” he asked.

The painting caught Congress top brass by surprise. Sonia termed the poster as a “work of art” created by a painter who hung the “sample piece” from a wall at the party office in Moradabad during the recent Assembly elections. “There is no objection to it since it is a work or art,” Sonia said reportedly.
