JAIPUR: In fresh problems for beleagured top Orissa police official B B Mohanti, a local court has issued non-bailable arrest warrant against him for allegedly helping his son, a convict in a rape case, jump parole.

The warrant against Mohanti, DGP (Home Guards), and a bailable warrant against his son, Biti Mohanti, were issued by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) II on June 8, to be executed by July 7.

Armed with the arrest warrants, a Rajasthan Police team had gone to Orissa and handed over a request letter on June 16 to Orissa DGP Amarananda Pattanayak to arrest Mohanti. The original warrant against the police official was also given, SP (East) V K Singh said.

The onus of arresting Mohanti lies with the Orissa Police now, he said.

The Rajasthan Police has kept the matter under wraps to avoid media attention which they thought earlier helped Mohanti evade arrest.

Biti Mohanti had jumped parole allegedly with the help of his father. The Additional District Magistrate I here has declined to issue warrants of arrest earlier.

While issuing the arrest warrant, ACJM II Rajendra Kumar Bansal had also directed SP (East) V K Singh to seek the help of Rajasthan DGP A S Gill and Orissa Police in executing the arrest warrants against the father and son by July 7, sources said.

The Lal Kothi police, which had registered the case against the Orissa police official and his absconding son, had filed an application in the ACJM court II seeking issuance of the arrest warrants against them.

The application was filed after a police team headed by a deputy SP rank officer, which had gone to Cuttack to arrest the senior Mohanti, came back empty-handed last month after camping there for four days as the police official had gone on medical leave.
The Orissa DGP had resumed duty on the very next day after the Rajasthan police team left for Jaipur.

Biti was granted bail in December last following an undertaking from his father.

He was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment following his conviction for raping a German tourist last year.
