Sensex ends 41 points down at 14,112.53

Heavy profit selling at the fag-end wiped off early gains and the Bombay Stock Exchange's sensitive index ended with a loss of nearly 41 points.

MUMBAI: Heavy profit selling at the fag-end wiped off early gains and the Bombay Stock Exchange's sensitive index ended with a loss of nearly 41 points.

The Sensex, which climbed to 14,326.55 points at the outset, tumbled to 14,112.53, a loss of 41.01 points on emergence of selling by funds in heavy-weight stocks.

However, the second wide-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, managed to close higher by 1.45 points at 4171.45. It touched the day's high of 4209.45 and a low of 4153.70 points.

The market rebounded in the last 30-minute of trade to close in negative zone as some refinery and metal stocks fell back to close with losses.

Even as the market ended on a weak note, stocks of heavy machinery, banking and consumer durables remained in demand and settled higher.

Capital goods index rose by 184.76 points at 11,156.78, banking index by 43.93 points at 7461.59 and consumer durable index by 46.33 points at 3960.32.
