Its the first time that commercial services firm in this business has announced plans to go carbon-neutral

CB Richard Ellis Group, a commercial real estate services company, today announced a goal to become carbon neutral by 2010. It also said that it plans to assist clients with energy efficiency programs at the 1.7 billion square feet of building space that the company manages around the world.

This represents the first time a major commercial real estate services firm has announced plans to go carbon-neutral.

The company in a statement said that it is working closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council to introduce new energy saving measures at client-owned and client-occupied properties. Working with both owners and tenants, CB Richard Ellis expects to engage its clients in discussions about environmental issues with a goal of implementing energy saving technology and practices this at vast majority of its clients’ properties and corporate facilities.

Anshuman Magazine, MD, CBRE (India), which manages 33 million sq ft, said, “The initiative is a response to the growing demand for green facilities from both clients and employees.’’

The conservation measures to be adopted would involve cutting down on unnecessary use of paper, switching off lights and air conditioners when not required.

“That would drastically reduce energy costs and create greener space,” said Magazine whose company sees this as a great opportunity not only to improve their clients’ operational performance, but also help protect the climate at the same time.

The company has established a global task force to aggregate and share best practices on a global basis, to develop educational programs for clients and employees and to develop internal policies and business practices.
