MMRDA plans 26 foot overbridges with escalators

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to construct foot over-bridges (FOBs) at 26 places along the Eastern, Western Express Highways, and the Jogeshwari-Vikroli Link Road (JVLR).

All FOBs would be escalators, the first of its kind in the city. To be built on the Built-Operate-Transfer, tender proposals for these bridges along the JVLR will be invited after the monsoon, while those on the highway would be done after consulting the PWD.

“We are keeping in mind security concerns. The escalators will prove to be a boon for pedestrians and also help us to remove pedestrian from the road,” said a MMRDA spokesman.

The escalators will come at Hiranandani Gardens, Powai Boating Club, Ram Ashram, Ajhara Shopping Centre, Panch Kutir, Majaas and Majaas depot among other places. On the WE Highway, 12 locations are selected for the escalators — Gokul Hotel (Dahisar), Devi Pada (Borivili), Saidham (Kandivili), Sarvodaya Nagar (Goregaon), Mahananda Dairy, Ismail Yusuf College, Gold Spot junction, New Hanuman Nagar junction, between Kalanagar and Kherwadi junctions, outside Bandra station and the road connecting Sion with Bandra.

On the Eastern Express Highway, the escalators are planned at Mulund Octroi Naka, three locations in Ghatkopar (Kamraj Nagar, Garodia Nagar and Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar), Postal Colony (Chembur) and Evarat Nagar (Sion).

But not everyone is happy with the electronic route for pedestrians. “Escalators are sensitive to water and since we face problems like flooding, the escalators motors will jam and stop working,” said BL Khatu, director, Consulting Engineering Services (CES), which is engaged in technical work and traffic study for the MUIP.
