Members of the Tenants’ Welfare Association (TWA) of Sardar Nagar at Sion, living in a MHADA colony have alleged that a 500sqft plot in the colony was fraudulently sold to a builder. It is believed that a seven-storey structure will be built there.
According to Bharat Shah, president of the TWA, the former chairperson of the committee forged signatures of other members and then sold the plot, which originally belonged to them, to the builder.
However, with sustained efforts and after filing an appeal in the city and civil sessions court, a stay order on the construction of the building. Two storeys have already come up. Meanwhile, the next hearing has been scheduled for June 5.
“In October 2004, when we inquired about the rent receipts, we were shocked to find out that it did not bear the name of TWA anymore. After investigations, the fraudulent transfers came to light,” said Shah.
Members of the TWA alleged that the ex-chairman, Ramesh Kelkar conspired with MHADA officials, planned to forge signatures of two other members, and got the plot fraudulently transferred to the builder.
PP Bhanushali and OM Thacker, the other two members whose signatures were allegedly forged, filed an affidavit in court that they were unaware of the transfer and did not sign on any resolution passed to make the transfer effective. “We even approached the police after we found out that the signatures were forged. But they did not appear to take due cognisance of the matter,” said Vishawanath Gokhale, a senior member of TWA.
