ALLAHABAD: Claiming that the BJP would emerge as the single largest group in the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, senior party leader Arun Jaitley on Sunday said political changes in the state would have a significant effect on national politics.

"The people of Uttar Pradesh are fed up with the ruling Samajwadi Party. They do not think of Congress as a viable alternative as its UPA government at the Centre has done little except allowing inflation to grow uncontrollably and soft-pedalling on issues of national security.

The BSP is not trusted by a large section of the society. In such a scenario, the BJP is emerging as the obvious choice," Jaitley told a press conference here.

He said the party, which initially expected a "not so good performance", picked up gradually as the election process began and hoped that the churning in the state will have a reflection on the national politics as well.

The BJP national secretary general claimed that the people's "disenchantment with the Congress" was clear from the party's rout in Punjab and Uttarakhand, its poor showing in Delhi municipal polls and "the inability of star campaigners like Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to instill confidence among the people of Uttar Pradesh".

Fortunately, this time we did not rake up the dynasty rule issue. Rahul Gandhi himself did so. And if the electorate rejected his claims of his family's tall achievements it can be inferred that the people had no love lost for the party itself, the BJP leader said.

Jaitley also came down heavily on the ruling Samajwadi Party in UP for "trying to divide the society along caste lines, pursuing a policy of minority appeasement and giving an exceedingly corrupt and criminalised administration".

Asked about former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh's reported comment that Samajwadi Party and BJP should join hands to keep Congress at bay, Jaitley said "we are not responsible for a hypothetical statement made by a former congress leader who has been expelled from his party on corruption charges".

He also dismissed queries on which party the BJP was likely to support in the event of a hung assembly, saying "these are hypothetical questions which arise out of slovenly surveys carried out by various media groups".
